How Much Does It Cost to Build an MVP in India? Cost to Build an MVP in India?
From ₹50,000 to ₹30 lakh — the range is wide and the variables matter more than the number. Here is how to think about MVP costs before you talk to your first developer.

Most founders ask the wrong question first. They ask "how much will my MVP cost?" when they should be asking "what is the smallest thing I can build that will tell me if this works?" The gap between those two questions is where budgets quietly double, timelines slip, and savings disappear.
In India, MVP costs range from near-zero to ₹30 lakh. The number itself is almost meaningless without context. What matters is the scope you commit to, the people you hire, and how disciplined you are about saying no to features that feel essential but are not.
What Actually Counts as an MVP
An MVP is the smallest functional version of your product that lets a real user complete the core action you want to charge for. That is it. If users can sign up, do the one thing, and give you feedback or money, you have an MVP.
What is not an MVP: a dashboard, an admin panel with analytics, a referral system, dark mode, iOS and Android apps on day one, or a chatbot. These are features you add after you have proof that people want the core thing. Every founder underestimates how much of their first build is actually non-MVP work dressed up as "essential infrastructure."
Scope creep is the real cost driver. A clean MVP that a freelancer builds for ₹3 lakh becomes a ₹12 lakh project when you add "just one more thing" four times. If you want to control cost, control scope. That decision happens before you talk to a single developer.
The Three Realistic Cost Tiers in India
No-code and low-code: ₹0 to ₹2 lakh. Tools like Bubble, Glide, Softr, Webflow, and Zoho Creator can get a functional product live for the cost of a monthly subscription and your time. This works for marketplaces, directories, booking tools, internal tools, and most SaaS products with simple logic. If you cannot code and your product does not need heavy custom backend work, start here. You can always rebuild later once you have paying users.
Freelancer-built: ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh. A solid full-stack freelancer in India charges ₹800 to ₹2,500 per hour. A well-scoped MVP takes 150 to 400 hours. You get a real codebase, basic auth, a database, and a hosted web app. This is the sweet spot for most Indian founders. The catch: you need to manage the project yourself and write clear specs.
Agency-built: ₹8 lakh to ₹30 lakh. Agencies include project managers, designers, QA, and a layer of accountability. You pay for that. If you have raised money and need to move fast without hiring, an agency makes sense. If you are bootstrapping, this tier will drain you before you reach product-market fit. The Costs No One Quotes You
The build quote is rarely the full cost. Design, if not included, runs ₹30,000 to ₹2 lakh for a decent UI. Testing and bug fixes typically add 15 to 25 percent on top of the dev quote. Hosting on AWS, Vercel, or Render runs ₹2,000 to ₹15,000 per month depending on traffic. Payment gateway integration, SMS and email services, and analytics add another ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 per month in recurring costs.
Then there are revisions. Every founder changes their mind after seeing the first build. Budget for at least one meaningful round of changes — usually 20 percent of the original cost. Post-launch fixes in the first 30 days are not optional. Something will break. Keep ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh aside for it.
Freelancer, Agency, or Technical Co-Founder
A technical co-founder is the cheapest option in cash terms and the most expensive in equity. If you give away 30 to 50 percent of your company, you had better be sure that person can actually ship and will stay for the long haul. Most founder breakups in India happen in year one or two over exactly this.
Freelancers work when you have clear specs, time to manage them, and a product that is well understood. Agencies work when speed matters more than money and you have validated the problem already. If you have not yet talked to 50 potential users, you are not ready to spend ₹10 lakh on a build — go validate the idea first.
Red Flags in Developer Quotes
Watch for quotes that are suspiciously round numbers with no breakdown. A real quote itemises design, frontend, backend, integrations, testing, and deployment. Watch for developers who agree to everything without pushing back on scope — good ones will tell you what to cut. Watch for upfront payments above 40 percent, no written scope document, and vague timelines like "4 to 8 weeks." That range usually means 12.
Ask for three references from past projects and actually call them. Ask what broke after launch and how the developer responded. The answer tells you more than any portfolio.
A Concrete Example
A Pune-based founder built a B2B invoicing tool for small manufacturers. She spent ₹1.8 lakh total: ₹40,000 on Bubble subscriptions and plugins over six months, ₹90,000 on a freelance designer for the UI, and ₹50,000 on a part-time developer to build two custom API integrations Bubble could not handle. She got 14 paying customers at ₹2,000 per month within four months of launch. Only then did she start a native rebuild.
That is the pattern worth copying. Build the cheapest thing that answers the question "will anyone pay?" Spend real money only after you have the answer. The MVP that teaches you the most is almost never the one that costs the most.
Reader questions.
01What is a realistic budget for a first-time founder in India?
If you are bootstrapping, aim to build your first version for under ₹5 lakh. Use no-code tools where possible, hire a single freelancer rather than an agency, and cut every feature that is not essential to the core user action.02Should I build a mobile app or a web app first?
Web app almost always. It is faster to build, easier to update, and works on any device. If you get traction, building a mobile app is a straightforward next step. Starting with native iOS and Android development is one of the most common ways Indian founders overspend.03How do I find a reliable freelance developer in India?
Toptal and Upwork have quality developers at higher rates. LinkedIn works well for mid-level developers. Referrals from other founders are the most reliable signal. Budget for a paid test project of ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 before committing to a full engagement.
