AI Alone Isn’t Impressive Anymore, Says Investor Roy Korner

US-based angel investor Roy Korner has issued a blunt wake-up call to AI startup founders: using artificial intelligence is no longer enough to win over investors.

In a widely shared LinkedIn post, Korner criticized the growing trend of startups leading their pitches with vague promises like “We use AI to…” — suggesting it’s a lazy crutch rather than a meaningful business proposition.

“AI Is Not a Moat. It’s Not a Business Model.”

Korner’s message is clear: investors care about outcomes, not tools.

“Nobody cares that you’re using AI. AI is not a moat. It’s not a business model. It’s not what makes you unique,” he wrote.

According to Korner, too many founders are relying on buzzwords instead of focusing on what truly matters — solving urgent, high-value problems for real customers.

Everyone Has Access to the Same Tools

Korner pointed out that most startups are using publicly available APIs and models, meaning AI alone offers little competitive advantage. In today’s fast-moving tech landscape, access to AI tools is no longer exclusive — what separates winners from the rest is execution, innovation, and deep customer understanding.

What Investors Are Actually Looking For

Korner’s post outlines what investors do want to see:

  • Real-world problems being solved
  • Execution and traction, not theoretical potential
  • A clear understanding of the customer’s pain points
  • A business model that is scalable, sustainable, and differentiated

In short, founders should lead with the problem, not the technology.

Why This Message Matters for Startups

The AI hype cycle has made it tempting for founders to assume that simply adding machine learning or generative AI to their pitch is enough. But with tools like GPT, DALL·E, and other APIs now widely available, the bar has been raised.

Startups must now prove why their product deserves to exist, not just how it’s built.

Final Thoughts: Substance Over Sizzle

Roy Korner’s advice cuts through the noise: AI is no longer a novelty — it’s table stakes. Startups that want to raise capital and scale need to focus on solving real problems, building trust with customers, and executing with discipline.

Technology is only part of the story. What really matters is what you’re doing with it — and who you’re doing it for.
