Vodafone Idea Accuses Airtel and Jio of Predatory Pricing Over Free 5G Offers

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has expressed dissatisfaction with its competitors, Airtel and Reliance Jio, for providing what it claims is “unlimited” 5G data access to customers without additional charges. This complaint has been formally lodged with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), accusing the rival telcos of engaging in predatory pricing practices.

Vi’s Concerns

According to The Economic Times, Vi’s grievance centers around Airtel and Jio’s strategy of offering 5G services to users with existing 4G plans. Vi, which has yet to fully roll out 5G across India, argues that the free or heavily subsidized 5G offerings by Airtel and Jio could undermine fair competition.

Current 5G Landscape

Airtel and Jio are currently leading the 5G rollout in India. Airtel’s “Airtel 5G Plus” service provides high-speed internet without data caps for customers on eligible 4G plans, starting from ₹239. Similarly, Jio has integrated its 5G offerings with existing plans, although both telcos maintain that these services are not technically free as they require a subscription to a 4G plan.

Regulatory Response

In response to Vi’s complaint, TRAI has initiated a review. The regulatory body has received detailed replies from both Airtel and Jio regarding their pricing and data usage strategies. TRAI’s legal, finance, and technical teams are currently assessing the situation to determine whether any action needs to be taken.

Following Jio’s 2016 entry into the market with aggressive pricing, Airtel and Vi previously accused Jio of unfair pricing practices, though these complaints were ultimately dismissed.
