In a bold move poised to reshape India’s educational technology sector, PhysicsWallah, the edtech unicorn renowned for its affordable coaching programs, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire Drishti IAS, a leading institute in civil services exam preparation. This potential acquisition, valued between ₹2,500 crore and ₹3,000 crore, stands as one of the most significant deals in the edtech industry in recent years.

Strategic Expansion: Venturing into UPSC Coaching

PhysicsWallah, traditionally recognized for its focus on engineering and medical entrance examinations, is strategically expanding its horizons. The acquisition of Drishti IAS signifies a deliberate foray into the competitive UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) coaching arena. This move aligns with PhysicsWallah’s vision to diversify its offerings and strengthen its presence in the offline coaching segment. 

Drishti IAS: A Strong Contender in Civil Services Coaching

Established by Vikas Divyakirti, Drishti IAS has carved a niche for itself in the UPSC coaching domain. The institute reported a revenue of ₹405 crore and a profit after tax of ₹90 crore for the fiscal year ending March 2025. Its flagship center in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, contributes to 58% of its total earnings, underscoring its dominant position in the market.

Financial Structuring: Performance-Based Payment Model

Sources indicate that the acquisition deal will be structured in tranches, with payments linked to future performance milestones. This approach ensures that the integration aligns with PhysicsWallah’s growth objectives and maintains the operational integrity of Drishti IAS.

Concurrently, PhysicsWallah is preparing for its initial public offering (IPO), aiming to raise $500 million at a valuation of $5 billion.
