Mrinal Chatterjee, born on February 10, 1961, is a distinguished Indian academic, author, and media professional. Currently serving as the head of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in Dhenkanal, Chatterjee has made significant contributions to media studies and literature in Odisha.

Chatterjee’s academic work includes five influential books on media studies in Odia, such as “History of Journalism in Odisha” and “Glossary of Terms for Media Persons.” His literary output is equally impressive, with ten novels and seven short story collections to his name. Notable works include “Jagate Thiba Jate Dina” (2010), “Kandhei” (2013), “Eka Sundar Chandini Ratire” (2016), “Yamraj Chutire” (2015), and “Yamraj Number 5003” (2016), which has also been translated into Assamese. In addition to his books, Chatterjee has penned a series of columns in Odia, reflecting his engagement with contemporary issues.

Chatterjee began his career as an English lecturer in 1983 before transitioning to journalism. He joined the Odia daily Sambad in 1984, where he worked as a sub-editor and later became the Edition-in-Charge of Sambad’s North Odisha edition in December 1996. His journalism career has been marked by a focus on environmental issues, earning him accolades such as the K.K. Birla Foundation Fellowship in 1996 and the Journalist Fellowship from the Centre for Science and Environment in 1991 and 1992.

In February 1999, Chatterjee joined the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in Dhenkanal as an associate professor. By June 2008, he had risen to the position of Professor and head of IIMC’s Eastern India campus. His tenure at IIMC has been characterized by a commitment to advancing media education and research.

Chatterjee has also made substantial contributions to radio and television. He worked with All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan for over seven years, taking on roles as an announcer and newsreader. His work extends to writing and producing successful tele-serials and anchoring various radio and television programs.

Through his diverse roles in academia, journalism, and media production, Mrinal Chatterjee has become a key figure in shaping media studies and literary culture in India.
