Tech CEO Jim Kavanaugh Urges Honesty About AI’s Impact on Jobs: Don’t BS Employees

Jim Kavanaugh, CEO of World Wide Technology, recently made headlines by calling on corporate leaders to be transparent about the transformative effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on the workforce. Speaking with CNBC, Kavanaugh emphasized that employees are “too smart” to believe that AI won’t alter their jobs and urged bosses to avoid misleading their teams.

Kavanaugh, who has a net worth of $7 billion, stated that pretending AI won’t change the workplace is simply “BS.” He pointed out that business leaders have a responsibility to communicate openly about the challenges and changes that AI brings. “If you think you’re going to try to game this and tell employees nothing’s going to change, that’s just BS,” he asserted.

While acknowledging that there is no definitive guide for navigating disruptive changes in the workforce, Kavanaugh emphasized the importance of honesty and transparency. He advised that everyone should embrace AI, stating, “There will be jobs that will be disrupted, there’s no question about that. But, for the most part, I truly believe it will be an enhancer and an accelerator of what we’re all doing.”

Kavanaugh’s comments echo broader concerns about AI’s potential to displace jobs. A recent Goldman Sachs report estimated that generative AI could automate away 300 million jobs globally, with two-thirds of current jobs in the U.S. and Europe being exposed to some degree of AI automation.

Clara Shih, Salesforce’s head of AI, echoed Kavanaugh’s sentiment, noting that while some jobs will disappear due to AI, new opportunities will also emerge, much like past technological advancements have created new roles. “The internet destroyed a lot of jobs. But then it created brand new ones that we couldn’t have even imagined in 1999,” she explained.

As companies like Klarna illustrate, AI can lead to workforce reductions, with the Swedish fintech firm cutting its staff from 5,000 to 3,800 in just one year thanks to AI efficiencies. However, Kavanaugh remains optimistic, believing that AI will ultimately enhance productivity and create new job descriptions across various industries.
