In a significant leadership change, Samir Kumar has been named the new country manager for Amazon India, following the decision of the current manager, Manish Tiwary, to pursue opportunities outside the company. This transition will officially take place on October 1, 2024.

A Veteran at Amazon

Samir Kumar has been with Amazon since 1999 and played a pivotal role in launching Amazon.in in 2013. His extensive experience within the company, particularly in emerging markets, positions him well to lead Amazon India’s consumer business. Kumar will also continue to oversee Amazon’s operations in the Middle East, South Africa, and Turkey, adding a global perspective to his new role.

“I am deeply appreciative of Manish’s leadership in steering Amazon.in to become the de facto starting point for Indians to buy and sell anything online,” stated Amit Agarwal, Senior Vice President for Emerging Markets at Amazon. Agarwal expressed confidence in Kumar’s capabilities, noting the strong local leadership team that will support him.

Transitioning Leadership

Manish Tiwary has been instrumental in shaping Amazon India’s growth since he joined as Vice President in 2016. His leadership saw the platform expand significantly, establishing itself as a major player in the Indian e-commerce landscape. Tiwary took over as country head in 2022 after Agarwal’s promotion.

As Tiwary prepares to leave, he will work closely with Kumar to ensure a smooth transition. Tiwary’s departure comes as a surprise to many, but he has expressed gratitude for his time at Amazon and optimism for his next venture.

Strong Leadership Team

Under Kumar’s leadership, key team members will include Saurabh Srivastava (Categories), Harsh Goyal (Everyday Essentials), Amit Nanda (Marketplace), and Aastha Jain (Growth Initiatives). All these leaders will report directly to Kumar, ensuring continuity and focus on Amazon India’s strategic objectives.

Future Outlook for Amazon India

Kumar’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Amazon India, as the company continues to expand its offerings and enhance customer experiences in a rapidly evolving e-commerce market. With a focus on innovation and customer satisfaction, Kumar aims to build on the strong foundation laid by Tiwary and further accelerate growth.

As Amazon India navigates the competitive landscape, Kumar’s extensive experience and understanding of the market will be invaluable in driving the company’s future initiatives.
