Meta-owned WhatsApp is taking video calling to the next level with augmented reality (AR) effects and filters, currently being tested for iPhone users. According to update tracker WABetainfo, these new AR features have been introduced in the iOS 24.17.10.74 update available on TestFlight.
The AR capabilities aim to enhance video calling with a variety of new tools. Users will soon be able to apply dynamic facial filters to customize and improve their appearance during calls. The update also includes a background editing tool, allowing users to blur their surroundings or choose from pre-set backgrounds. Additionally, a low-light mode will enhance visibility in dim environments, and a touch-up mode will smooth the user’s appearance for a more polished look.
WhatsApp is also introducing a feature that will save customized video call settings, so users won’t have to adjust their preferences for each call. These updates are currently available to select beta testers and are expected to be rolled out more broadly in the coming weeks.
In related developments, Meta has updated WhatsApp Business messaging policies to allow companies in regulated sectors to send promotional messages to users in India through the platform. Furthermore, WhatsApp is working on a new “Username and PIN” feature to enhance user privacy, allowing users to replace their phone numbers with usernames and choose from three privacy settings: “Username,” “Phone number,” and “Username with PIN.”
These advancements reflect WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to improve user experience and privacy while expanding its feature set.
