In a major leadership move, Unacademy has appointed Sumit Jain, co-founder and CEO of its subsidiary Graphy, as the new chief executive officer of its flagship Test Preparation business. The announcement comes as the edtech unicorn looks to strengthen its core revenue-driving segment while expanding its digital learning footprint.

Sumit Jain, who previously co-founded the real estate platform CommonFloor and later the creator-focused platform Graphy, joined Unacademy in 2020. Over the past three years, he has played a pivotal role in improving financial discipline, enhancing unit economics, and elevating learner experience across the Test Prep vertical. This appointment consolidates his leadership over one of India’s most critical education platforms.

A Leadership Choice Rooted in Trust and Experience

Unacademy co-founder Gaurav Munjal expressed confidence in Jain’s capabilities, highlighting their longstanding professional relationship. “I have known Sumit for 12 years, back when he was the CEO of CommonFloor and acquired my first company, Flatchat. Since joining Unacademy as co-founder in 2020, he has been instrumental in significantly improving the Unit Economics of our Test Prep Business and, more importantly, the Learner Experience,” Munjal said.

The two entrepreneurs first crossed paths over a decade ago during the acquisition of Munjal’s startup Flatchat by CommonFloor, laying the foundation for a strong working relationship that continues to this day.

Strengthening Unacademy’s Test Prep Vertical

The Test Preparation segment remains Unacademy’s core business and primary revenue generator. With the appointment of Jain, the company aims to drive profitability, improve operational efficiency, and deliver an elevated learning experience to millions of students preparing for competitive exams like NEET, JEE, UPSC, and others.

Since joining Unacademy, Jain has overseen several strategic initiatives, including:

  • Enhancing financial discipline across the Test Prep vertical.
  • Improving unit economics to ensure sustainable growth.
  • Leveraging technology to deliver better learning outcomes.
  • Strengthening content quality and learner engagement metrics.

Industry experts note that his deep experience in scaling technology businesses, combined with his knowledge of the edtech ecosystem, positions him well to lead the Test Prep vertical into its next growth phase.

Graphy and the Edtech Expansion

Before this appointment, Sumit Jain was leading Graphy, Unacademy’s creator-focused platform. Graphy enables educators and content creators to launch online courses and monetize their expertise. Under Jain’s leadership, Graphy has expanded rapidly, empowering hundreds of creators to reach learners nationwide.

Now, with his new role at the Test Prep business, Jain is expected to bring his experience from Graphy to enhance the digital-first, learner-centric approach of Unacademy’s flagship vertical. The move aligns with Unacademy’s broader strategy to integrate technology, personalized learning, and scalable operations across all its educational platforms.

The Significance for India’s Edtech Landscape

The appointment comes at a crucial time for India’s edtech industry, which is witnessing rapid digital adoption and intense competition. Platforms like Byju’s, Vedantu, and Toppr are continuously innovating, and Unacademy’s leadership move signals its intent to consolidate market share and improve student outcomes.

Experts believe that with Jain’s proven track record in technology, finance, and operations, Unacademy can expect:

  • Streamlined operations for greater efficiency.
  • Enhanced learner engagement through data-driven insights.
  • Improved financial sustainability of the Test Prep segment.
  • Continued innovation in content delivery and technology integration.

Jain’s Vision for the Test Prep Business

Commenting on his new role, Sumit Jain emphasized his commitment to both learners and educators. “Our goal is to deliver the highest quality learning experience while ensuring accessibility and affordability for students across India. We aim to create a platform that not only prepares learners for competitive exams but also empowers them to achieve their full potential,” he said.

With this vision, Jain is expected to foster innovation, leverage AI-driven learning tools, and expand the reach of Unacademy’s Test Prep programs, ensuring that the company stays ahead in the fiercely competitive edtech market.

Sumit Jain’s appointment as CEO of Unacademy’s Test Prep business marks a significant leadership milestone for the company. By combining his experience in scaling tech platforms with Unacademy’s educational expertise, Jain is poised to drive operational excellence, elevate learner experience, and reinforce the company’s position as a leader in India’s test preparation market.

For students, educators, and investors alike, this move signals a renewed focus on quality, growth, and innovation in one of India’s largest and most influential edtech companies.
