Danish startup Self.io has introduced an innovative robotic massage system designed to deliver high-quality, personalized massages at a more affordable price than traditional human therapists. With many people dreaming of having a personal masseuse to alleviate stress and physical discomfort, Self.io aims to make that dream more accessible.
Massages can often be costly and difficult to schedule, leading to a demand for a solution that provides on-demand relief. Self.io’s massage robots leverage advanced robotics, machine learning, and computer vision to address various wellness needs, including stress relief and pain management.
Founded in 2022 by CEO Julian Jørgensen and his brother Jimmy Alison Jørgensen, a robotics professor, Self.io’s robots are intended for use in corporate offices, fitness centers, and salons. Julian shared insights about the motivation behind creating robot massages.
The Need for Robot Massage
Self.io’s robotic massage system aims to mitigate the industry’s chronic shortage of massage therapists by offering 24/7 availability. These robots are particularly beneficial in high-traffic locations like airports and hotels, providing relief for travelers suffering from jet lag or long flights.
The technology enables highly personalized massages tailored to individual body types, a significant advantage over traditional massage methods. Julian, who has a background as a software developer and entrepreneur, was inspired by his own struggles with neck and back pain to pursue this venture.
How It Works
Upon arrival for their first session, customers undergo a brief onboarding with a human therapist, who helps create a customized massage program. This initial interaction fosters comfort and ensures a tailored experience.
The customer lies on a standard massage table, and a camera captures a 3D representation of their body, allowing the system to deliver personalized massages based on body scans. The technology continuously learns and improves from user feedback, logging biometric data and measuring pressure during each session.
Having completed over 5,400 massages across approximately 1,380 users, Self.io has gathered extensive data to refine its offerings further.
Unique Product Testing Approach
Unlike other massage robots on the market, Self.io developed its technology on a budget of less than €250,000. This investment encompassed various components, including hardware, software, AI, and compliance measures. Testing the product in real-world settings helped gather valuable user feedback and enhance the robot’s functionality.
Initial trials in Norway indicated high customer satisfaction, with 75% of participants rating their experience between seven and ten stars. The company found that their primary users were women aged 40 and over, a surprising but welcome demographic.
Affordable and Accessible Massages
Self.io’s rental model offers corporate offices and fitness centers the chance to provide massages for a monthly fee of €2,000 for 600 sessions, making massage therapy accessible at rates between €8 and €25 per user, depending on membership.
Once the initial capital expenditure is covered, ongoing costs are minimal, primarily consisting of rental and electricity expenses.
Competing in the Market
While Self.io is not the only player in the massage robot market, it distinguishes itself from competitors like Capsix Robotics and Aescape by focusing on affordability and user-friendliness. Unlike other models that require special clothing or complex setups, Self.io’s approach prioritizes convenience and accessibility.
Safety Considerations
Safety is a crucial concern for any robotic application. Julian emphasized that user safety was rarely questioned by investors or customers, reflecting a general trust in the technology. The robots are equipped with safety mechanisms that restrict pressure and speed to ensure user comfort.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Self.io plans to develop a sensor-embedded glove capable of training robots to replicate various massage techniques. The company aims to enhance its technology to create fully autonomous robots that can perform massages based on comprehensive body scans.
With the rapid advancements in AI and robotics, Self.io is poised to lead the way in transforming how we approach wellness and stress relief, making personalized massage experiences more accessible to all.
