OpenAI Co-Founder Durk Kingma Joins Anthropic: What This Means for the AI Landscape

In an exciting move for the AI community, Durk Kingma, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, has announced he’s joining Anthropic. Kingma shared the news through a series of posts on X, highlighting his enthusiasm for the new role while revealing he’ll primarily be working remotely from the Netherlands.

Kingma didn’t specify which part of Anthropic he’ll be joining or leading, but he expressed his eagerness to contribute to the company’s mission of developing AI systems responsibly. “Anthropic’s approach to AI development resonates significantly with my own beliefs,” he noted. He’s looking forward to working alongside talented team members, including former colleagues from OpenAI and Google.

With a Ph.D. in machine learning from the University of Amsterdam, Kingma has an impressive background. He spent years as a doctoral fellow at Google before helping to establish OpenAI as a research scientist. At OpenAI, he led efforts in developing generative AI models, including famous creations like DALL-E 3 and ChatGPT.

After leaving OpenAI in 2018, Kingma took on roles as an angel investor and advisor for AI startups. He also returned to Google, where he contributed to Google Brain—one of the company’s leading AI research labs—before it merged with DeepMind in 2023.

Kingma’s hiring is part of Anthropic’s ongoing strategy to attract top talent from the AI field. Earlier this year, the company brought on Jan Leike, OpenAI’s former safety lead, and John Schulman, another co-founder of OpenAI. In a bid to bolster its product development, Anthropic also appointed Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram, as its first head of product.

Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO and a former VP of research at OpenAI, has been assembling a team of ex-OpenAI employees after leaving the company due to disagreements over its commercial direction. Amodei’s vision for Anthropic places a strong emphasis on AI safety, setting the company apart from OpenAI in this regard.

As Anthropic continues to grow, Kingma’s expertise and insights are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI development. His transition from OpenAI to Anthropic marks a significant shift in the industry landscape, raising questions about the future direction of AI research and safety protocols.

This latest hire showcases Anthropic’s commitment to building a strong team dedicated to responsible AI. It will be exciting to see how Kingma’s contributions will influence the company’s projects and overall mission in the coming months.
