Schmooze, an AI-driven meme-based dating app, has successfully raised $4 million in a Series A funding round led by Elevation Capital. The funding also attracted participation from notable angel investors, including founders from UltraHuman, The Souled Store, Mosaic Wellness, and Paytm.
Founded in 2021 by Vidya Madhavan and Abhinav Anurag, Schmooze initially targeted US users but expanded to the Indian market last year, amassing over 1 million users and an impressive 900 million meme swipes. The app aims to address the shortcomings of traditional dating platforms that focus primarily on physical appearance, instead allowing users to swipe on memes and match based on shared humor.
Madhavan, reflecting on her time at Stanford, noted the desire for deeper connections beyond superficial swiping. “Memes are the new language of connection for Gen Z,” she said. Schmooze leverages this insight, using AI to recommend profiles based on shared meme preferences.
The app features a virtual coach, known as ‘Genie,’ which helps users enhance their storytelling skills for more authentic interactions. Additionally, Schmooze offers unique features like Roast AI, simulating conversations with a stand-up comedian, and Rant AI, a digital diary that provides companionship even when users aren’t engaging with others.
Competing with major players like Bumble, Tinder, and Hinge, Schmooze reports a 3x higher ratio of female to male users compared to conventional dating platforms. The newly acquired funds will be used to fuel growth, expand the platform’s features, and further develop its AI capabilities.
Amit Aggarwal, Principal at Elevation Capital, praised Schmooze for its innovative approach, stating, “It’s designed to be the wingman Gen Z didn’t know they needed—powered by cutting-edge AI and a rich tapestry of memes.” He emphasized that Schmooze is setting a new standard in the dating app industry by enabling meaningful connections.
The rising interest in dating platforms is evident, as seen with Juleo’s recent $2.5 million funding and Flutrr’s $240,000 investment, showcasing a growing investor appetite for innovative dating solutions.
