Nelson Mandela, the greatest hero of modern India, was the first black president of South Africa who had protested against apartheid in his life, and he spent nearly 27 years in prison from 1964 to 1990 while fighting against the struggle for apartheid. During his stay in jail, he faced many persecutions. He strongly opposed racism while walking on the path of non-violence.
Nelson Mandela was a staunch supporter of Mahatma Gandhi, and followed his ideas in his life. The African National Congress League was founded by Nelson Mandela in the year 1944. Apart from this, he laid great emphasis on the promotion of education in his life.

Nelson Rolihlahal Mandela was born Rohihlaal Mandela, he was the first black ex-president of South Africa. He served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black chief officer of the country, and the first to win a democratic election. He ventured into politics to remove discrimination based on color. Along with this, he served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997.
Internationally, Mandela participated in various political campaigns and movements from 1998 to 1999. Nelson was born in the royal family of Thembu, Mandela received his early education at Fort Hare University and Law from Witwatersrand University. While living in Johannesburg, he started participating in political programs and campaigns. He later joined the ANC to become a founding member of the Youth League.
1948 When Goro was given more importance in governmental rights, he started a black campaign in 1952 in collaboration with his party ANC. And only after this campaign he became the President of Congress in 1955. Despite being a lawyer, he was also imprisoned for his actions.
On 5 August 1962, he was arrested for inciting the workers to strike and leaving the country without permission. He was tried and on 12 July 1964, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was sent to the prison of Robben Island for punishment, but even his punishment did not diminish his enthusiasm. He also started mobilizing black prisoners in jail. He was finally released on 11 February 1990 after spending 27 years in prison. After the release, he laid the foundation for a democratic and multi-ethnic Africa by a policy of compromise and peace.
In 1994, apartheid elections were held in South Africa. The African National Congress received 62 percent of the vote and formed its government with a majority. On 10 May 1994, Mandela became the first black president of his country. The new constitution of South Africa was approved by the Parliament in May 1996, under which several institutions were established to investigate political and administrative rights. In 1997, he broke away from active politics and after two years, he also left the post of Congress-president in 1999.
Nelson Mandela was very much an advocate of non-violent path like Mahatma Gandhi . He considered Gandhi to be a source of inspiration and learned the lesson of non-violence from him.
The people of South Africa widely regarded Mandela as the “Father of the Nation”. He was seen as the “first founder of democracy”, “national liberator and savior”. In 2004, a statue of Mandela was installed at the Sandton Square Shopping Center in Johannesburg, and the center was renamed Nelson Mandela Square.
In South Africa, they are often called Madi Baqah which is an honorific word for the elderly. In November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared his birthday (18 July) as ‘Mandela Day’ in recognition of his contribution to the anti-apartheid struggle. In order to commemorate Mandela’s association with this movement for 67 years, people were requested to donate 67 minutes out of 24 hours a day to help others. Mandela has been awarded more than 250 honors and awards by various countries and institutions of the world.
Nelson Mandela was called Gandhi of Africa. He not only fought against apartheid, but also worked to strengthen the economy of his country. He laid the foundation of democratic and multi-ethnic Africa. In the year 1993 Nelson Mandela ji was also awarded with the Sal Shanti Nobel Prize for his greatest work. Apart from this, the United Nations has also declared his birthday on July 18 as Mandela Day.
