Do you dream of playing bigger in your business and life, but in reality fear usually gets in the way?
Several years ago, Selena Soo shared that she remembered desperately wishing she wasn’t so fearful and sensitive.
She was the kind of person who would get discouraged scrolling through my social media feed, looking at other people creating inspirational content, moving crowds, and helping lots of people. She thought that she didn’t have the right personality to be a front-facing leader. Selena often would hide in the bathroom at industry events, because she felt that she was terrible at small talk and struggled to connect with people. And worst of all, she would turn down publicity and speaking opportunities left and right, because she was afraid of not being perfect and losing control.
Selena shares that to be totally honest, I still have internal struggles around “being seen.” I still struggle with shyness and introversion.
But here’s the thing: I made the decision to move forward and play big, even in the face of fear.
I want that for you, too!
That’s why Selena is sharing her #1 piece of advice for entrepreneurs, which is:
Start before you’re ready.
Don’t wait for the “perfect moment” to put yourself out there. The “perfect moment” is a myth and if you wait for that, you’ll be stuck in limbo forever.
Don’t wait for the butterflies to go away or to feel brave enough to tackle a goal. Face your fears and do it anyway!
Today, I speak on big stages, make videos regularly, and share my ideas with millions of people.
These things have scared me more than you could possibly imagine. But I’m truly grateful that I can continue to push through the fears and doubts. I know that the alternative is being stuck in the shadows, playing small, and not living out my purpose.
If something is important to you, you can find a way to make it happen—even if you’re afraid. Instead of looking at that big, scary goal as something to avoid, look at it as something that could change your life in amazing ways… and go for it!
I know that’s easier said than done. But here’s the good news: it gets easier.
The first time you go live on Instagram, record a podcast interview, or step in front of the camera, you might be terrified. But if you can feel the fear and do it anyway, it will be a little bit easier the next time. Do it again and again, and you’ll build a degree of confidence that you never imagined you’d have!
Some of the scariest things I’ve ever done—like taking a big risk in my business or moving from New York to Puerto Rico—have led to the most wonderful rewards.
I believe that we’re all born with a purpose and the power to do incredible things… to make a difference that can only be made when we learn to stand in our own power.
So, the next time you feel fear around a big goal, please don’t run away. Instead, embrace it as an opportunity to blossom. After all, your greatest opportunities for growth are waiting on the other side.
