Samsung Electronics has officially kicked off laptop manufacturing in India, marking a significant expansion of its local production footprint under the Indian government’s flagship “Make in India” initiative.
The South Korean tech giant has started assembling laptops at its Greater Noida facility, which already serves as a production hub for smartphones, tablets, wearables, and feature phones. According to insiders familiar with the development, the first batch of India-assembled Samsung laptops has already entered the domestic market — and full-scale production is set to ramp up soon.
A Strategic Shift in Samsung’s India Gameplan
The move signals Samsung’s deeper commitment to India — not just as a top consumer market but as a key global manufacturing base. With India rapidly pushing to localize electronics production and reduce import dependency, Samsung’s decision fits perfectly with the government’s vision for a self-reliant tech ecosystem.
This latest development comes on the heels of a high-level meeting between India’s Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Samsung Southwest Asia CEO JB Park, along with Corporate VP SP Chun. Minister Vaishnaw lauded Samsung’s efforts, emphasizing the brand’s role in boosting “advanced technology manufacturing in Bharat” through local talent and innovation.
Entering the Laptop Arena – Made in India Style
While Samsung holds a powerful position in India’s smartphone market, its laptop segment share has historically been smaller compared to industry heavyweights like HP, Dell, ASUS, and Lenovo.
By shifting laptop manufacturing to India, Samsung is clearly betting on increased competitiveness in this segment, aiming to deliver locally assembled laptops that cater to Indian consumers’ needs while also aligning with cost-efficiency and supply chain advantages.
Aligned with India’s Big Tech Vision
Samsung’s laptop manufacturing move is a win-win for both the company and the Indian government. For Samsung, it strengthens its “local for local” strategy, while for India, it aligns with the broader agenda to boost exports, create jobs, and establish a tech manufacturing powerhouse.
This development marks yet another high-impact step in India’s journey toward becoming a global electronics manufacturing hub, and Samsung’s investment is a strong signal of growing confidence from global tech players.
