The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) has raised a formal concern regarding the unchecked expansion of quick commerce platforms such as Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto. In a letter to Trade Minister Piyush Goyal, the AICPDF has called for a thorough review of the sector’s rapid growth, warning that it is creating an uneven playing field that threatens the viability of small, traditional retailers.
The AICPDF’s statement marks its first major intervention in the ongoing debate about the impact of quick commerce on India’s retail landscape. The federation argues that the meteoric rise of these platforms is undermining the longstanding presence of mom-and-pop (kirana) stores, which have traditionally been a cornerstone of India’s retail sector.
“The livelihood of millions of small retailers and distributors is at stake due to the rapid and unchecked growth of quick commerce platforms. It is crucial that the government intervenes to ensure that the growth of e-commerce in India is balanced and does not come at the cost of traditional retail,” said Dhairyashil Patil, National President of the AICPDF, in the letter.
Quick commerce, which initially focused on delivering basic groceries, has expanded to include a wide range of products, from electronics to sports equipment. This sector, now valued at $5 billion, has seen explosive growth in recent years. Despite its success, Patil and the AICPDF view this rapid expansion with concern, highlighting that it could potentially harm small-scale retailers who are unable to compete with the scale and speed of these new entrants.
Trade Minister Piyush Goyal had previously commented that while the growth of e-commerce is significant, it should not be viewed solely as a matter of pride. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach to ensure that traditional retail businesses are not unduly harmed by the rise of quick commerce.
The AICPDF’s call for government scrutiny reflects broader concerns about the implications of fast-growing digital platforms on traditional retail structures. As quick commerce continues to evolve and expand, the federation advocates for regulatory measures to ensure fair competition and protect the interests of smaller, traditional retailers.
