Universal Music Group (UMG) has secured an expanded licensing agreement with Meta Platforms, allowing its vast catalog of music to be used and shared across Meta’s suite of platforms, including WhatsApp for the first time. This new multiyear global deal will see songs from UMG’s top artists, such as Taylor Swift, Adele, and Elton John, featured across Meta’s network, which encompasses Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Horizon, Threads, and WhatsApp.
Previously, UMG and Meta had a licensing agreement established in 2017 that permitted the use of UMG’s recorded music and music publishing catalogs on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. This initial deal focused on background music for videos and other social experiences. However, the new agreement significantly broadens the scope, integrating short-form video and licensed music specifically for WhatsApp.
The expanded deal aims to enhance monetization opportunities for Universal Music artists and songwriters. It also addresses the challenges posed by unlicensed content, including that generated by artificial intelligence, by ensuring fair compensation for creators and strengthening protections against unauthorized uses.
In their joint statement, both companies emphasized their commitment to supporting artists and creators by protecting their work and ensuring fair remuneration. This agreement also builds on Meta’s existing relationships with other major music licensors like Warner Music Group and Merlin, reflecting the growing importance of social media platforms for artist revenue.
This new arrangement follows a recent resolution between Universal Music and TikTok, where a similar agreement was reached after a contentious period marked by disputes over royalty payments. Taylor Swift’s decision to reintroduce her music to TikTok played a role in facilitating a new dialogue and improved terms for artists.
The deal with Meta represents a significant step forward in integrating music into social media platforms and provides UMG artists with enhanced opportunities to reach audiences and generate revenue through these popular channels.
