A Dream Turned Reality
What would you do with a six-figure salary? Travel the world, enjoy spa days, or maybe indulge in fine dining? For Camilla Barnard, co-founder of Rude Health, it’s not just a dream—it’s her reality! After investing £4,000 into her own muesli brand, Camilla’s company is now projected to make a staggering £28 million this year.
The Birth of Rude Health
Camilla’s journey began in 2006 when she was at home with her two young children. Frustrated by the bland supermarket muesli options, she and a neighbor decided they could create something better. “We knew we could do better and that people deserved better,” Camilla recalls. With her ex-husband, she invested £4,000 to develop a unique recipe with 23 ingredients—far more than the usual 6-10 found in store-bought muesli.
Growing the Business
Rude Health started small but quickly gained momentum. After a £150,000 boost from family and friends, they moved into a commercial kitchen to get organic certification. The real breakthrough came when they expanded into porridge and cereals, landing a deal with Waitrose, their biggest customer. Recognizing a demand for dairy alternatives, they launched their own range of plant-based milks in 2013, solidifying their position in the health food market.
Camilla’s Personal Journey
Reflecting on her financial decisions, Camilla highlights her campervan as her best investment, allowing her spontaneous getaways. However, she advises against mixing money with friends after a bad lending experience. Now that her children are older, she feels a sense of relief as she balances work and family life. “I don’t know what the answer is, but I always felt I should have been doing more work and been around for the children more,” she shares.
Daily Life and Routine
Camilla enjoys walking to work along the scenic river in Putney, often taking the bus in rainy weather. She’s a fan of natural products, especially her favorite deodorant, Akt. At her café, she indulges in delicious drinks made with Rude Health’s almond and oat milks.
When it comes to food, Camilla prefers to enjoy meals rather than eat on the go. She often cooks for her kids and dines out once or twice a week at local spots like Bottle & Rye in Brixton. Fresh produce is a priority, and she shops at Wimbledon Farmers’ Market and Ocado.
Looking Ahead
As Camilla Barnard continues to lead Rude Health, her journey from a small investment to a multi-million-pound business serves as inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere. With a commitment to quality and health, she proves that with passion and determination, anything is possible.
