In a significant legal clash, India’s premier mapping application, MapMyIndia, has accused ride-hailing giant Ola of illegally reverse engineering its mapping data and using it to develop Ola Maps, the company’s newly launched indigenous mapping service. The allegations have surfaced following Ola’s recent introduction of Ola Maps, a move that was previously heralded as a major step towards reducing reliance on external mapping services.

MapMyIndia, which has been a key player in the Indian mapping and navigation sector, claims that Ola’s use of its licensed data, as per a 2021 agreement, was not confined to the agreed terms. The mapping firm alleges that Ola has illicitly used this access to develop its own mapping product, copying MapMyIndia’s proprietary data, application programming interfaces (APIs), and software developer kits (SDKs).

The legal notice issued by MapMyIndia accuses Ola of having “illegal motive for unjust commercial gains,” asserting that Ola’s actions are a breach of their licensing agreement and a violation of copyright laws. However, Ola has strongly refuted these claims. The ride-hailing company has stated, “Your assertion that you have developed API and map data/Ola Maps solely through open map is factually incorrect and not tenable.”

The dispute traces back to a 2021 licensing agreement between CE Info Systems, the parent company of MapMyIndia, and Ola Electric, Ola’s electric vehicle subsidiary. MapMyIndia’s legal notice asserts that Ola’s development of its mapping service involves unauthorized use of MapMyIndia’s source code and data, which allegedly contravenes the terms of their agreement.

Ola’s launch of Ola Maps in July 2024 was a strategic move aimed at reducing dependency on external mapping services. Ola’s founder, Bhavish Aggarwal, celebrated the launch on social media platform X, emphasizing that the company had successfully transitioned away from Google Maps, saving Rs 100 crore annually. Aggarwal touted Ola Maps as a crucial step towards operational independence and cost efficiency.

The legal dispute between MapMyIndia and Ola highlights the ongoing tension in the tech and mapping industries, particularly around data usage and intellectual property rights.
