But Menon has now set the record straight: there’s no CEO search underway, and no plans to step aside.
“There are no plans to hire a new CEO for BigBasket, and no formal search process has been initiated for such a role,” Menon said in a statement, calling the speculation baseless.
Menon emphasized that the founding team remains fully committed to running the company, with no exit timelines in place. “The founding team is not bound by any exit timelines and continues to lead BigBasket with focus and commitment,” he said.
This pushback comes amid chatter that Tata Group, which owns a 64.3% stake in BigBasket’s B2B arm, had been exploring succession options as Menon’s five-year tenure neared its end. Reports suggested the company was shortlisting candidates for the top job.
But Menon insists that no such discussions have taken place with the board.
BigBasket was founded in 2011 by Hari Menon, Vipul Parekh, VS Sudhakar, Abhinay Choudhari, and VS Ramesh. The startup became one of India’s earliest movers in online grocery, building a strong brand around convenience and reliability.
In 2021, Tata Digital acquired a controlling 64.3% stake in BigBasket’s B2B unit, valuing the company at $3.2 billion when it raised $200 million.
While BigBasket has a strong foundation, it’s facing intense competition from quick-commerce players like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto.
