Just six months after making a big hiring push, Bhavish Aggarwal-founded AI startup Krutrim has laid off around 100 employees—sending shockwaves through India’s booming AI ecosystem. The layoffs hit the linguistics division hardest, raising questions about the startup’s future direction and funding.
The majority of layoffs were from the linguistics team, which was responsible for training and refining Kruti, Krutrim’s AI assistant that supports at least 10 Indian languages—including Tamil, Telugu, Odia, and Marathi.
This is the second round of layoffs for Krutrim. Back in June, the startup reportedly cut over a dozen employees during an earlier restructuring phase.
Krutrim cited a “strategic realignment” and a focus on “efficient capital deployment” as reasons for trimming their workforce. The company says it’s building leaner, more agile teams to align with “evolving business priorities.”
Launched with bold ambitions, Krutrim quickly rose to prominence. It became India’s fastest AI startup to reach unicorn status in January after raising $50 million from investors including Z47 (formerly Matrix Partners India).
The startup made headlines with its plan to pour ₹2,000 crore into AI development via Krutrim AI Labs, with plans to ramp that up to ₹10,000 crore next year.
Despite these ambitious goals, Krutrim reportedly scaled down its fundraising target from $500 million to $300 million amid lukewarm investor interest. The company’s large language model (LLM) and cloud products, launched in 2024, have struggled to gain traction.
In fact, some startups that initially considered Krutrim’s offerings are reportedly switching to more established hyperscalers, signaling trouble in gaining market share.
Krutrim’s layoffs and funding woes highlight the growing pains of India’s AI sector. The startup scene is competitive, capital-intensive, and fast-moving. Even unicorn startups like Krutrim face immense pressure to prove their value quickly or risk being left behind.
The company appears to be recalibrating its strategy with a smaller, more focused team. But questions remain:
