Wally Amos, the iconic founder of Famous Amos cookies, has passed away at the age of 88 due to complications from dementia, according to a statement released by his children, Sarah, Michael, Gregory, and Shawn Amos.

Amos, renowned for his distinctive Panama hat, kazoo, and infectious optimism, opened his bakery in 1975 on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, introducing bite-sized chocolate chip cookies that quickly became a sensation. His cookies, crafted from a cherished family recipe, attracted a slew of Hollywood celebrities and musicians.

Born in Tallahassee, Florida, Amos transformed a simple passion into a successful cookie empire. He famously described his approach to business in a 1991 interview with Detroit Black Journal, emphasizing his commitment and joy in his work over mere financial gain.

Beyond his business success, Amos made a mark on popular culture with appearances on TV shows such as “The Office,” “The Jeffersons,” and “Taxi.” Despite selling his cookie brand to a private equity group in 1988 after facing financial difficulties, his legacy as a pioneer and cultural figure endures.

His children remembered him as a “true original Black American hero” and celebrated his role as a source of pride and inspiration.
