Justin Couto, founder and CEO of SoCreate, recognized a gap in the market: while existing software helped writers format their scripts, it often fell short in offering the visual and creative tools that modern storytelling demands. “When I started my journey in film, I found screenwriting to be dull and uninspired. We’re crafting stories for a visual medium, yet using outdated, black-and-white documents? There had to be a better way,” Couto explained to TechCrunch.
SoCreate provides all the standard features expected in screenwriting software, including easy-to-use templates for creating industry-standard screenplays. However, what sets it apart is its innovative image uploader, allowing writers to enhance their scripts with visual concepts like characters and settings. Users can upload their own images or choose from a curated gallery, making the writing process more immersive.
Soon, an AI-powered image generator will join the mix, offering users the ability to create unique visuals using models from OpenAI and Stable Diffusion. Importantly, SoCreate isn’t venturing into AI-generated writing; instead, the focus is on using imagery to inspire creativity and break the monotony of traditional screenwriting.
Another standout feature, launched just this week, is “Storyteller.” This hub enables users to share their scripts in a public library, reminiscent of platforms like Wattpad, allowing both established and aspiring writers to showcase their work for free. Couto believes that Storyteller will help budding screenwriters market their scripts more effectively, offering a visually captivating portfolio without the need for Hollywood connections.
For those concerned about plagiarism, SoCreate offers privacy options and employs encryption to protect users’ work. Couto argues that publishing scripts online can actually provide a safeguard against theft, as it creates timestamped proof of authorship. “A PDF doesn’t give you that,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Couto envisions Storyteller evolving into an interactive experience that incorporates AI-generated character voices, sound effects, and background music. Users can leave comments on scripts, facilitating instant feedback and collaboration—a significant upgrade from the traditional PDF-sharing method.
SoCreate is not limited to screenwriters; the company is exploring templates for articles, novels, and short stories, broadening its appeal to various creatives. “Once we perfect narrative storytelling, we’ll expand into new areas like business and education,” Couto said, hinting at a future where writers can earn revenue through subscriptions and sharing opportunities within the SoCreate ecosystem.
Launched last May, SoCreate has already attracted over 1,200 subscribers, including writers with credits at Amazon, Disney, Marvel, and Netflix. The platform is free for all users, with premium features like custom images and reading stats available for $10 per month. A Personal tier at $5 offers unlimited projects and access to SoCreate’s image gallery.
With a successful $3 million pre-seed round under its belt, SoCreate is now raising $5 million in seed funding to fuel further development and marketing. As it continues to innovate, SoCreate is poised to reshape how screenwriters approach their craft, making the process not just functional, but visually engaging and collaborative.
