Netflix India Under Investigation for Visa Violations and Racial Discrimination

Netflix’s operations in India are facing intense scrutiny as the government investigates allegations of visa violations, racial discrimination, and tax evasion. This probe follows a lawsuit filed by Nandini Mehta, a former Netflix executive, who claims wrongful termination and discrimination—charges Netflix firmly denies.

Allegations Emerge

The investigation was disclosed in a July 20 email from Deepak Yadav, an official at India’s Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), directed to Nandini Mehta. The email outlined concerns regarding Netflix’s business practices in India, including:

  • Visa Violations: Allegations that the company engaged in improper visa practices.
  • Tax Evasion: Concerns over potential tax irregularities linked to its operations.
  • Racial Discrimination: Reports of discriminatory practices within the workplace.

These allegations indicate a troubling trend for Netflix as it seeks to establish a stronger foothold in India, a vital market with around 10 million subscribers.

Response from Netflix

In response to the investigation, a Netflix spokesperson stated that the company was “unaware of an investigation by the Indian government.” They reaffirmed their commitment to fair business practices, dismissing the claims made by Mehta.

Nandini Mehta’s Lawsuit

Nandini Mehta, who served as the director of business and legal affairs for Netflix in India until 2020, is currently pursuing a lawsuit in the United States against the streaming giant. She has accused Netflix of wrongful termination, as well as racial and gender discrimination. Mehta expressed her support for the Indian government’s investigation and hopes the findings will be disclosed publicly.

The Broader Context

Netflix has invested significantly in local content production, aiming to cater to Indian audiences with Bollywood collaborations and original programming. However, the platform has also faced backlash over content deemed controversial or insensitive by viewers and authorities alike.

As Netflix navigates this investigation, the outcome could have significant implications for its reputation and operations in India. The company’s ability to maintain its user base and expand further will hinge on how it addresses these serious allegations.
