Finland is emerging as an attractive destination for Indian entrepreneurs looking to establish or relocate their tech startups. Ranked 14th on the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2024 and 6th globally for innovation (Global Innovation Index – GII 2023), Finland offers a robust environment for technological innovation and business growth.

To support this ambition, Finland provides various incentives, including financing for research and development aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises. This funding is available to companies that are established and based in Finland.

Hanna Riski, Senior Advisor of Startup Attraction at Business Finland, highlights that India is a priority for Finland’s talent attraction strategy. She notes, “Indian startup founders are drawn to Finland’s stable, safe, and transparent business environment, which is known for its low bureaucracy.”

The Finnish Startup Permit process offers residence permits to startup teams with innovative and scalable business ideas. Since 2018, around 45 Indian startups have secured permits to operate in Finland, with more showing interest in the country’s supportive programs.

Laura Lindeman, Senior Director at Business Finland, emphasizes Finland’s focus on sectors such as renewable energy, food, bioeconomy, quantum computing, defense, telecommunications, healthcare, and electronic gaming. She believes that Finland is an ideal environment for startups looking to expand and enter international markets.

Riski advises entrepreneurs to thoroughly research Finland’s startup ecosystem. She says, “Finland’s vibrant tech scene, public funding opportunities, and numerous co-working spaces, incubators, and accelerators make it a fertile ground for startup growth. The country’s high levels of trust, transparency, and good governance attract global investors and partners.”

With its reputation as the happiest country in the world for seven consecutive years, Finland offers a unique blend of work-life balance, a thriving tech community, and exceptional quality of life. Its strategic focus on key growth sectors aligns well with many Indian startups’ trajectories, making it an ideal destination for entrepreneurial ventures.
