Vivo India is set to unveil a new manufacturing unit later this year, a move that will double its production capacity, according to CEO Jerome Chen. This development marks a significant milestone as the company celebrates a decade of operations in India.

In a recent report, Chen highlighted Vivo’s ongoing commitment to India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, emphasizing the strategic importance of the new facility. “We are excited to commence operations at our new manufacturing plant, which will enhance our production capabilities and strengthen our dedication to localising operations,” Chen stated.

Since 2022, Vivo has produced 25 million 5G smartphones. The company has invested ₹3,500 crore in India and manufactured over 150 million smartphones at its Greater Noida facility. Additionally, Vivo’s exports from India grew significantly, from ₹90 crore in 2022 to ₹300 crore in 2023.

Vivo plans to focus on localisation with a two-pronged approach. This includes appointing local leaders to manage operations and tailoring product design to meet Indian consumer preferences through its ‘Design for India’ initiative. The company will also work on increasing local value addition by developing a new factory, introducing advanced localisation technology, and enhancing the sourcing of critical components such as optical image stabilisers, camera modules, memory, and OLED displays.

Chen noted that over the past decade, Vivo’s focus was on growth and market consolidation. Moving forward, the company aims to deepen its local engagement and adapt to evolving market demands. The company has already made strides in local sourcing, with all motherboards for Vivo smartphones produced in India, and over 90% of fingerprint sensors, batteries, and chargers sourced locally.

Chen also praised India’s progress in infrastructure, governance, and financial sector reforms, which he believes will contribute to India’s role as a global economic powerhouse. Vivo, holding a 19% market share in India, operates over 70,000 retail outlets, 650 exclusive stores, and 650 service centers across the country, generating approximately 200,000 jobs.

With these initiatives, Vivo is poised to strengthen its position in the Indian market and continue its significant contributions to the local economy.
