Bengaluru Gets a New Space Powerhouse

India’s space sector just took another giant leap. OrbitAID Aerospace, a Bengaluru-based spacetech startup specializing in On-Orbit Servicing and Refueling (OOSR), has inaugurated a state-of-the-art R&D facility that promises to redefine satellite servicing.

The new centre, spanning 6,500 sq. ft. and backed by an investment of over $2 million, will focus on developing technologies to extend the lifetime of satellites by enabling in-space servicing and refueling.


ISRO Chairman Leads the Launch

The facility was officially inaugurated by Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). His presence underscored ISRO’s growing support for private space ventures that are pushing India’s role in the global space economy.

OrbitAID’s new R&D hub isn’t just another space lab—it is being touted as India’s largest commercial setup for Rendezvous Proximity Operations & Docking (RPOD) and one of the biggest worldwide.

The infrastructure includes:

  • A high-end control room for RPOD operations.
  • A class 10,000 cleanroom for satellite assembly and integration.
  • Advanced fuel transfer systems for testing and validating in-space refueling technologies.

This cutting-edge setup will allow OrbitAID to test complex docking maneuvers and refueling processes that are critical for next-generation space missions.

Satellites are expensive assets, often costing hundreds of millions of dollars to build and launch. Once they run out of fuel, they typically become space junk—even if their systems are still operational.
