Generative AI is increasingly shaping the startup landscape, offering a range of tools that enhance efficiency and speed for new businesses. Despite the buzz surrounding technologies like ChatGPT, the precise impact on economic activity is still emerging. Many businesses, particularly smaller ones, are grappling with how to harness these tools effectively.

Sean Ammirati, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University who has been teaching entrepreneurship for over a decade, observed a significant shift in his students’ progress this year. For the first time, Ammirati encouraged his students to integrate generative AI into their entrepreneurial processes, advising them to view AI as a co-founder. The results were remarkable; students utilized AI tools such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and FlowiseAI for tasks ranging from marketing and coding to product development and customer recruitment. This led to increased interest from venture capitalists and a notable acceleration in startup development.

While it’s still uncertain when generative AI will have a measurable impact on broader economic activity, some entrepreneurs are already experiencing its benefits. AI has become a crucial tool for startups, aiding in writing code, understanding legal documents, crafting social media posts, editing copy, and managing payroll. The technology is enabling faster and more efficient company launches.

The potential economic impact of generative AI is significant. Startups, which are vital for job creation and economic resilience, are likely to see accelerated innovation and productivity. Steven Bright, founder of Skittenz, a company specializing in colorful glove coverings, used ChatGPT to navigate various challenges, including legal and technical queries. The support from AI gave him the confidence to pursue his idea without needing extensive external expertise.

Research indicates that newer businesses are more inclined to experiment with AI. A recent working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research highlights that AI use is higher among young firms, likely due to its affordability and versatility. Gusto, a small-business platform, found that around 20% of businesses launched last year are leveraging generative AI for tasks like market research, contract reviews, and job postings. Liz Wilke from Gusto suggests that AI could significantly transform the startup ecosystem, potentially leading to faster profitability, growth, and stability.

Jamie Steven, an entrepreneur in Greenwater, Washington, used AI to streamline his startup, Orb.net, an application that assesses internet connection quality. He relied on ChatGPT for business fundamentals and GitHub’s Copilot for coding, which helped him raise $700,000 in funding and expedite the development process.

The AI-driven startup boom extends beyond new business creation. Investors are channeling substantial funds into AI startups, and those emerging from AI applications often show strong potential for job creation and revenue growth. Erik Noyes, an entrepreneurship professor at Babson College, describes AI as a valuable resource for entrepreneurs, enabling them to achieve more with limited resources.

E. Darren Liddell, founder of My Money Story, a financial coaching company for people of color with lower incomes, integrated AI to automate user pairings for financial goal assistance. This innovation saved the company time and resources, proving especially valuable for a lean startup.

In summary, generative AI is not only supporting existing startups but is also driving the creation of new business opportunities. As the technology continues to evolve, its role in shaping the future of entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly clear.
